Rolling Stone Charts

About Rolling Stone Charts

The Rolling Stone Charts publish song and album data, compiled from dozens of U.S. retailers and service producers, on a daily basis. Because of the breadth of suppliers and their individual reporting time frames. Their independent analytics firm, Alpha Data, formerly known as BuzzAngle Music, populates numbers each day into the RS Charts within a seven-hour processing period of each day’s transactions, with a target availability in the system of 12 PM Eastern Time.

The Challenge

Penske Media Corporation needed the development of Rolling Stone Charts, an in-depth and in-the-moment view of the biggest songs, albums and artists in music. The Rolling Stone charts harness the innovative analytics of Alpha Data, formerly known as BuzzAngle Music. The project was unprecedented for a consumer magazine, featuring daily updates, as well as interactive functionality and unprecedented transparency.

The Solution

We created the ability to receive chart data via the REST API, store it as JSON and then render it on the front-end via custom page templates and shortcodes. We also built a RS Sender User Interface creating the capability to interface with the API via a UI and manually make a request to the API with specific parameters and load the data into a QA environment first before making it live.

As a team of music lovers, working on this groundbreaking project was a dream come true.
